THEATRE ETIQUETTE
Here is a basic set of rules and guidelines when attending a live performance at our venue:
- Arrive to the theatre on time.
- Visit the restroom before the performance begins.
- Turn off your cell phone or, if it must be on, put it on vibrate. Do not speak on the phone during the performance. If you must call the person back, do it outside during intermission or after the show has finished. Do not text or use your phone during the performance, as the light is distracting to audience members and is a safety hazard to the actors.
- Pay attention to the announcements made during the curtain speech prior to the show.
- Don’t speak during the performance. Whispering is still speaking, so only do so in an emergency.
- Remember that the Overture (the introductory music) in Musical Theatre is part of the performance, so be quiet when it begins.
- DO NOT take pictures, video, or audio recordings during the performance. It can be very distracting to the actors, and is against copyright laws.
- Remain in your seat for the entire performance. If you must leave, exit during intermission. In an emergency, wait for an appropriate time while the lights are up on stage. Actors are moving in the blackouts/darkness, so it is unsafe to exit during that time. It is a disturbance to other guests and rude to get up in the middle of a quiet moment. It also can be very distracting to the actors and your fellow audience members.
- If you must have a cough drop, or something of that nature, do not make noise with the wrapper.
- Do not put your feet up on the seats and do not kick the seat in front of you.
- Keep your arms and legs by your table. Extending your legs in spaces that actors might come through is dangerous.
- Do not put or throw anything on the stage.
- Do not yell and scream if the lights go dim or dark.
- Please laugh when the performance is funny. This engages the audience/actors participation.
- Please applaud when it is appropriate during the performance. This is usually after a song and after the completion of a scene.
- Please applaud at bows…this tells the performers and crew that you appreciate their work.
- Stand and applaud if you really thought the show was great.
- Most of all…ENJOY THE SHOW! 🙂
